Ghosts, Toast, and
the Things Unsaid
THE BRIEF..........................
To create an immersive performance with 360˚ sound using Google’s invisible, embedded technology.
Video by Grumpy Sailor

THE PROJECT.........................
Google’s Creative Lab and Grumpy Sailor in Sydney collaborated with Sandpit to create interactive performance Ghosts, Toast and the Things Unsaid, which premiered at the 2016 Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Ghosts is an intimate experience in which two audience members (the ‘ghosts’) revisit the kitchen where they fell in love and grew old during their 50 years together.
The performance features mobile audio technology which allows the audience to ‘tune in’ to the inner thoughts of the actors as they pan a 360-degree set. The result is a mix of live action (spoken on stage) and inner monologue (delivered through tiny speakers embedded in ghost costumes), provoking the audience to meditate on their propensity to keep secrets and how the words that go unheard affect our relationships.
The performance marries novel production and staging techniques with simple truths about our everyday lives. It went on to become a virtual reality installation at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and acquired into their permanent collection.
THE TECHNOLOGY..........................
Android phone, headset, custom Android app and web based dash board

WHAT'S BEEN SAID..........................
"The Ghosts project set out to explore uncharted territory of augmented performance in 360 degrees. It was conceptually and technically daunting however - Sandpit assembled a team without a single weak player. The outcome completely exceeded my expectations. I wish we had more Sandpits around to play with."
